FAQs & WTFs
Are you available for work?
Generally, yes. Please contact me at hola@avefelix.com. I usually work for money. Unless you are someone I truly admire, like Jordi Hurtado or Dolly Parton*. In that case, I might work in exchange for an autograph.
*Update: the offer still stands for any of her charities, no autograph needed.
Could you share two truths and a lie to break the ice?
Sure! My favourite fruit is loquat, I love love love writing about myself, and I collect vintage jeans made in Europe or the US (Egypt is acceptable, too).
Who is Ave Felix?
Sometimes I wonder that too.
Why that name?
In Spanish, “ave Fénix” is a phoenix, that mythological bird who suffers from burnout. I did a play on words with Felix and Fenix. I thought it was funny, and the IG handle was free. For your convenience, you can call me Ave, Felix, or both. Just like Madonna, “I contain multitudes”.
Do you have any other nicknames?
Well, I’ve been known by many names in the past:
The landfill, given by a coworker who didn’t appreciate my deep pop culture knowledge.
That m****rf***r, given by a lovely boss at a fantastic workplace.
Felix Dominguez, given by my ID card.
Do you have any experience as an illustrator?
Of course, I have worked with clients such as The Guardian, The Observer, Dwell, Pismo, The Posttraumatic, Directa.cat and The Madrileñer.
How would you describe your style?
That’s a question we artists love to hate. I don’t! My style is based on comic books, pop culture, and whatever I am obsessed with at the moment. I like to use a mix of traditional inkwork and coloring, and some digital touchups (not AI) to create ironic, playful drawings, sometimes with a dark twist. If you’re cringing, laughing, or just weirded out by my work, then my mission is accomplished.
What is your credit card PIN?
Ha! Nice try.
Where are you based?
I am currently based in Huelva, Andalusia, Spain. I’m afraid I can’t share more details without doxing myself.
I live in a different time zone, do you mind working odd hours?
Not at all. Although I’m based in GMT+1, I’ve worked across different time zones, from GMT 0 to GMT-7. With a bit of sleep deprivation on my end and some understanding on both sides, we can manage everything perfectly.
I’m a small business. Do you offer a discount?
Yes, if you are a small business in need of illustration and you use the words PLEASE and THANK YOU on your first email, you will get a -10% discount. Courtesy pays.
Did you always want to be an illustrator?
No, I didn’t even know that was a paid role, so I chose a “real” office job. Little did I know my industry was about to collapse forever due to social media influencers…
So what did you do for a living before Illustration?
For many, many years, I worked in advertising as a copywriter. I know, shocking. I quit the industry—and coffee, too (it gives me heart palpitations now). But at least I know how to avoid generic “about me” texts, right?
You seem a little judgmental. Do you even like me?
I love people, especially editorial art directors. However, for a detailed list of likes and dislikes, you can write an email to blacklist@avefelix.com
What is your stance on Gen AI?
What is your stance on me stealing a piece of fruit from everyone in my building so I can make a fruit salad? Would you call me a chef or a thief? Also, I wrote all of this myself and had lots of fun doing it. That’s the point of art, work, and life, at least for me.
What about passion projects?
My second favourite kind of projects, after very well paid projects. Here’s a few: a spaceship size comparison, an anti-Christmas email campaign, a monograph on eggs, a magazine devoted to non places, the visual depiction of a plot-twist, a funny canned fish brand, and this poster.
Do you sell your art too?
Yes, I have prints available at La Galería Roja, Voraz, La Tienda de la Vecina, Amezkua Shop, The Sevillaner, The Madrileñer, and The Onubenser (all selling and shipping almost worldwide). For original artwork enquiries, you can write to thiswillbeworthmillions@avefelix.com.
What about exhibitions?
I’m an exhibition-ist, in the good sense. Click here to see some selected projects.
No offense, but how old are you?
None taken! I’m 34 but thanks to retinoids and SPF 50+ cream, I look like I’m 33 (32 by candlelight).
Onion or no onion on your Spanish omelette?
For some reason, this is a very polarizing topic. I don’t really mind either way, as long as it’s properly cooked in the middle—no raw eggs, please. It’s like asking British people: Do you love Marmite? In that case, I’m afraid I don’t.
I am still curious. Where can I find more juicy details?
This press & features section is perfect for stalkers and journalists alike.
One last thing, where can I see your official selfie?
Hi!
